SMALL hu:pu
2017 | laser cut steel | 50x50x16 cm
The Hoopoe (hu:pu in phonetics) is the national bird of Israel, it has a distinctive long sharp beak and a feathered crown. This sculpture captures the moment it is about to land, its beak almost touching a metal flower. The wings arching over the ground creating a unique space. It was built as a model for the larger hu:pu sculpture.
CREATION PROCESS
Made from laser-cut 2mm thick steel sheet. The sculpture was bent into shape and then reinforced with rough welding seams. The individual feathers were welded on, one on top of the other further strengthening the structure. This allowed the sculpture to be held only by the tips of the first feathers.
