TERESA IN TRANCE
2016 | laser cut plywood | 70x60x110 cm
A modern reinterpretation of Bernini's timeless masterpiece, the 'Ecstasy of Saint Teresa' (1652), this rendition transplants the divine ecstasy into the vibrant realm of trance music festivals, where heightened sensory experiences are augmented by the influence of mind-altering substances.
Crafted specifically for Burnerot 2016, a small-scale gathering reminiscent of the iconic Burning Man festival. Its ritualistic finale, the sculpture was burned in true Burning Man fashion, imbued the creation with a poignant temporality, echoing the transient nature of artistic expression within the festival culture.
CREATION PROCESS
This sculpture is an intricate composition comprising delicate laser-cut plywood slices meticulously arranged with precision. These slices, thoughtfully spaced at equal intervals and positioned diagonally, coalesce to form the silhouette of a female figure amidst a trance-like setting. Enhancing the visual narrative, three projectors were strategically employed to project a captivating array of abstract colors and shapes onto the surface of the sculpture, enveloping the figure in a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. Synchronized with the projected visuals, an evocative electronic soundtrack further accentuates the immersive experience, seamlessly harmonizing with the mesmerizing visuals to evoke a captivating sensory journey for the audience.
