MODI ALON
2019 | Steel Rods | 750x700x150 cm
A monument in memory of Modi Alon, the first commander of the 101 Air Squadron. Crashing at the Herzlia airport on the 16th of October 1948, when he returned from a skirmish as part of the war of independence. The sculpture was commissioned by his family and the Israeli Airport Authority, with the help of The Israeli Air Force Association.
The full-scale Avia S-199 warplane ascending in the air, its shape is traced by squiggly lines enhancing its motion.
It is up to the viewer to decide if it is disintegrating or building up as it is rising in the air.
CREATION PROCESS
First I constructed a gypsum jig in the shape of the airplane, this would give me the correct dimensions of the sculpture. Then one by one, I welded 10mm steel rods, each bent by hand to conform to the shape of the jig and create a continuous flowing motion. The rods are connected together to create a strong structural shape. The jig was later removed from the inside leaving a unique silhouette of lines. It was painted matt black.
